The Historical Thang Again

First, I came home yesterday and went straight to bed.

That’s why I didn’t do my usual blog-rounds etc. The insomnia got to me, finally, I think.

Anyway, here are my responses to the lovely people who came by yesterday. 🙂

Elizabeth Hoyt is guest blogging at Magical Musings this Saturday. Any book by Loretta Chase is terrific. Of course, Christina Dodd, Madeline Hunter and Mary Balogh. Jan Kenny, who’s in my critique group, has a damn good western out now, One Real Cowboy.

I’ll come by! I’ve read Chase. But I saw less than amazing reviews of her later books, and that’s why she’s not on my list.

The only one I know I’ve read is Susan Carroll. It was good, but not fantastic. I second Edie–Loretta Chase is great, especially Lord of Scoundrels. The only Kinsale I’ve read is Flowers From the Storm, and it is a KILLER. I have a love/hate thing with it.

I have read Loretta Chase, and I adored Lord of Scoundrels. I couldn’t even get into FFTS. It’s one of the few books I DNFed during the Early Years, as I now call them.

Have you read “to love and to cherish” and “to have and to hold” by Patricia Gaffney? They’re both really good.

I will do that if I like TDQ. ^.^ You know, The Damned Queen would make a much better title.

I didn’t know Gaffney wrote historicals. I thought she did women’s fiction. So I’ll pick those two up. 🙂

You haven’t read Shadowheart? Oh, my. Kinsale is a goddess. It’s a VERY intense book. Very intense. I’m completely irrational about it, and it’s quite possibly the very best romance I’ve ever read (IMO, of course–who else’s opinion would I be giving?). Love, love, love it. But it’s definitely not everyone’s cuppa.

And yeah, Lisa Valdez is easy–she just has one book out: Passion. Which is aptly named. I raved about this one and pimped it to everybody who would listen, and several people who really didn’t want to listen. LOL They were mostly as enthralled as I was.

I loved Lydia Joyce’s first book, The Veil of Night, but her second one is buried in the TBR pile somewhere, so The Veil of Night is the only one I can vouch for. It’s a gothic, which I love.

Haven’t read the others–I don’t read a lot of historical romance.

I couldn’t get into Flowers, so I’ve never picked up another book by her.

Oooh Gothic? I’m feeling like one of those, so I’ll start there.

I’m no help on this since i don’t read historicals…well not unless they’re snuck into an anthology.

It’s not that I don’t read them. It’s more “I don’t read them any more unless they have vamps or something.”

I was once. And it wasn’t a “I hate all historicals now therefore I won’t read them any more” thing. I think it’s more that paranormals etc supplanted the historicals I used to love. At the time, vamps/paras were all shiny and new to me.

So I’m going to try again. Mostly because I read Sybil‘s blog now and she’s always Historicals Historicals Historicals. And they sound sooooo good!

I started out in romance reading only historicals. The contemps just didn’t seem to have enough juice at the time. Except that in the past few years, it was a good year to have read more than ONE!

I liked it, but I kinda felt the historical part was lacking. I think maybe it doesn’t compare to my First historical, if you see what I mean?

Well…. It can’t be so bad, right? Besides, so long I don’t read it and HATE it, all’s good. 🙂 Plus I don’t finish everything any more, yanno.
