The Historical Thang Again

First, I came home yesterday and went straight to bed.

That’s why I didn’t do my usual blog-rounds etc. The insomnia got to me, finally, I think.

Anyway, here are my responses to the lovely people who came by yesterday. 🙂

There’s a cut, because it’s reaaaaally long.

Edie “I’m not Evil” Ramer says:

Elizabeth Hoyt is guest blogging at Magical Musings this Saturday. ) Any book by Loretta Chase is terrific. Of course, Christina Dodd, Madeline Hunter and Mary Balogh. Jan Kenny, who’s in my critique group, has a damn good western out now, One Real Cowboy.

I’ll come by! I’ve read Chase. But I saw less than amazing reviews of her later books, and that’s why she’s not on my list.

Meljean “Demon Moon is V. Good” Brook says:

Lisa Valdez only has one book out — her next comes out in May.

And now, Dear Author has posted the news for Valdez fans: Patience isn’t even releasing this year!

JoelySue “Severed Hand Sisters Can Get Creeped Out By Stuff” Burkhart:

The only one I know I’ve read is Susan Carroll. It was good, but not fantastic. I second Edie–Loretta Chase is great, especially Lord of Scoundrels. The only Kinsale I’ve read is Flowers From the Storm, and it is a KILLER. I have a love/hate thing with it.

I have read Loretta Chase, and I adored Lord of Scoundrels. I couldn’t even get into FFTS. It’s one of the few books I DNFed during the Early Years, as I now call them.

Dionne “Bham” Galace says:

“Bham”. I’m never going to live that down, am I? )

Girl, you should check out the two other books by Susan Carroll after the Dark Queen.

Have you read “to love and to cherish” and “to have and to hold” by Patricia Gaffney? They’re both really good.

Nope, you’re never going to live that down. Unless you get Sybil to change it back to Bam on her sidebar.

I will do that if I like TDQ. ^.^ You know, The Damned Queen would make a much better title.

I didn’t know Gaffney wrote historicals. I thought she did women’s fiction. So I’ll pick those two up. 🙂

Darla “I have more black boots than you” says:

You haven’t read Shadowheart? Oh, my. Kinsale is a goddess. It’s a VERY intense book. Very intense. I’m completely irrational about it, and it’s quite possibly the very best romance I’ve ever read (IMO, of course–who else’s opinion would I be giving?). Love, love, love it. But it’s definitely not everyone’s cuppa.

And yeah, Lisa Valdez is easy–she just has one book out: Passion. Which is aptly named. I raved about this one and pimped it to everybody who would listen, and several people who really didn’t want to listen. LOL They were mostly as enthralled as I was.

I loved Lydia Joyce’s first book, The Veil of Night, but her second one is buried in the TBR pile somewhere, so The Veil of Night is the only one I can vouch for. It’s a gothic, which I love.

Haven’t read the others–I don’t read a lot of historical romance.

I couldn’t get into Flowers, so I’ve never picked up another book by her.

Oooh Gothic? I’m feeling like one of those, so I’ll start there.

I am sooooo jealous of your black boot collection. I only have four pairs!

Rhian “the NOT-wannabe Kickass Ninja Chick” says:

I’m no help on this since i don’t read historicals…well not unless they’re snuck into an anthology.

It’s not that I don’t read them. It’s more “I don’t read them any more unless they have vamps or something.”

Alison “Sexy Heroes and Kickass Heroines” Kent says:

Maybe you’re just not an historical reader?

I was once. And it wasn’t a “I hate all historicals now therefore I won’t read them any more” thing. I think it’s more that paranormals etc supplanted the historicals I used to love. At the time, vamps/paras were all shiny and new to me.

So I’m going to try again. Mostly because I read Sybil‘s blog now and she’s always Historicals Historicals Historicals. And they sound sooooo good!

Colleen “Buffy meets Pride & Prejudice” Gleason says:

I loved The Raven Prince…how about The Leopard Prince, which was just released, so it counts!

Yep, getting this. 🙂 Peeps, Rises The Night comes out next month!

Scooper “Just One Name” says:

That’s just sad. There was a time when I only read historical romance, now I’m happy to find one or two a month. *sigh*

I started out in romance reading only historicals. The contemps just didn’t seem to have enough juice at the time. Except that in the past few years, it was a good year to have read more than ONE!

MG “I Like Teenagers” Braden says:

I haven’t really read historicals since I was in my teens. The only one I’ve read recently was from Colleen Gleason. I did like that one though! LOL

I liked it, but I kinda felt the historical part was lacking. I think maybe it doesn’t compare to my First historical, if you see what I mean?

Vernieda “I’m A Really Good Sort” says:

I dunno, May. I always thought you weren’t much of a historical reader. ;)

I did like The Dark Queen a lot though. (This might mean you’ll probably have the opposite reaction. lol)

Oh but I was. Once upon a time anyway.

Well…. It can’t be so bad, right? Besides, so long I don’t read it and HATE it, all’s good. 🙂 Plus I don’t finish everything any more, yanno.

I have been maligned, I tell you!

May, my favorite Patricia Gaffney book is CROOKED HEARTS. I bet you’ll like it too.

For the most part, I quit reading historicals when Julie Garwood quit writing them. 😦 I think I got burnt out.

    I second Gaffney’s “Crooked Hearts”–con artist h/h, 1880s San Francisco, caper, humor–what more could I ask for?

I’m still a historical nut–wouldn’t write them if I wasn’t–but have slowed down on my reading because most out there aren’t meaty enough for me. Not to mention the fact that I loathe what the genre has done to Regencies, and am in even more trepidation over what will happen to Victorians and Georgians.

Just call me eve with my historical apple

I do think you shall love Shadowheart *g*. Was By Arrangement on the list? You must read that. Madeline Hunter… her most recent book was grand as well, as you know since you read my blog ;).

LLG has a great book, oldie called Conor’s Way. It can be tres hard to find. I so know I should have picked it up when I saw it last but I was having an attack of omfg I own too many books.

Edie, remember why you’re Evil. *ggg*

Amie, I did read all of Garwood’s historicals. I moved to her romantic suspense, but felt it wasn’t as good.

Camilla, have you blogged about this?

Sybil, who in the world is LLG? I have read Hunter, I think it was Stealing Heaven? Didn’t become a fan, but I’ll pick up By Arrangement and see whether that changes.

May, read CROOKED HEARTS. You’ll love it so much, you’ll take the ‘evil’ off my name.

  7. April 9, 2007 at 11:46 am

You better hope so, Evil Edie! (Just in case you’re right, I’ve to call you that one last time)

  8. April 10, 2007 at 1:43 am

Blogged about what? Loathing the death of the history in the historical? Nope. I can’t–I just get too frustrated and it feels like I’m talking to a brick wall for the most part. Which why I’m just going to wag my bum in the face of “convention” and do my historicals the way I want them to be done.
